Basketball Names Ronnie Dean Assistant Coach

July 23, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU has hired Ronnie Dean as an assistant basketball coach, athletic director and men's basketball coach Hugh Durham announced today. Dean replaces Doug Durham, who left after six seasons to become an assistant with first-year head coach Michael Perry at Georgia State University.

Dean comes to JU after one season at the University of Montana, where he served as an assistant under former Florida State and DePaul head coach Pat Kennedy. Montana won 13 games in 2002-03, including a 70-68 win over No. 15 Stanford on the Cardinal's home floor. Dean's recruiting background was the key ingredient in his hiring at JU.

"We were looking for an experienced recruiter outside of Florida," said Durham, who became just the 32nd Division I coach to win 600 career games last season. "Ronnie Dean has been a successful recruiter in the west and midwest, and has strong junior college contacts. He's also been a head coach at the junior college level and has always had a good rapport with his players."

Dean spent three seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State prior to coaching at Montana, where he was the 49ers primary recruiter and established himself as one of the top recruiters in the country. In 2000, Long Beach State's recruiting class was ranked 31st in the nation by Basketball Times, which also ranked the 49ers' junior college recruiting class sixth nationally. Dean helped Long Beach State win 55 games in three seasons under head coach Wayne Morgan, who was recently named head coach at Iowa State, including a 24-6 mark in 1999-2000 and a bid to the National Invitational Tournament.

Dean has been a coach at the Division I and junior college levels for most of the past 14 years. Prior to his stint at Long Beach State, he was an assistant at Cal state Fullerton in 1997-98. He has also coached at Barton County (Kan.) Community College (1994-95), Lamar (Colo.) Community College (1993-94) and Howard (Texas) Community College (1992-93). While an assistant at Barton, Dean was tabbed the top assistant coach in the Jayhawk Conference by Basketball Times.

Dean is a 1990 graduate of Harris Stowe State College (St. Louis, Mo.), where he earned his B.A. in elementary education. The Charleston, Missouri, native has a wife, Vicki, a son, Lezcano (20), and a daughter, Carrie (19).
