Basketball Falls To Stetson, 68-63, In A-Sun Action

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU junior forward Antonio Cool (Chicago Heights, Ill.) scored a career-high 22 points, while sophomore forward Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) posted his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 16 rebounds, but Stetson used a balanced scoring attack and dominant rebounding to hang on for a 68-63 win over the Dolphins Monday night at Swisher Gymnasium. JU (5-5, 1-2 A-Sun) managed just two field goals in the final 8:42 as Stetson (4-6, 2-1 A-Sun) erased a seven-point deficit with an 18-6 run to end the game.
Senior guard David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) added 12 points for the Dolphins, who shot a season-low 36 percent from the floor, including just 4-of-23 from three-point range. Stetson out-rebounded JU, 49-34, and connected on 5-of-6 free throws in the final 39 seconds. Junior point guard Jesse Kimbrough (Mexia, Texas) came off the bench to score eight points and hand out four assists for the Dolphins.
JU trailed 58-57 with 5:12 to play, but Lee and Quaintance hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Dolphins a 61-58 advantage at the 2:32 mark. Stetson's Anthony Register answered with a three-pointer to tie the game, and then E.J. Gordon gave the Hatters the lead for good with a put-back dunk with 1:35 to play in the game. Quaintance, who also had four assists and three blocks, cut the Stetson lead to one with 17 seconds to play, but Register nailed a pair of free throws and blocked Lee's game-tying three-point attempt with eight seconds remaining.
Cool scored six straight points to give JU a 57-50 lead at the 8:42 mark of the second half with his second three-pointer of the game. Stetson's Mark Stiles answered with four straight points followed by a pair of Will Holloman free throws to cut the Dolphin lead to one with 5:12 to play. Holloman and Gordon each scored 14 to pace the Hatters, while Register and Karl Hollingsworth added 12 a piece. Stetson scored 20 points off 14 JU turnovers and had 15 second-chance points.
JU led 38-34 at the half despite trailing by as much as five early in the game. The Dolphins took advantage of nine first-half turnovers by Stetson as Cool and Lee combined for 19 of JU's 38 points.
The Dolphins return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 5th against Troy at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
