Basketball Rallies For 82-81 Win Over Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Senior guard David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) scored a season-high 23 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with four seconds to play as JU erased a 13-point second-half deficit to defeat Florida Atlantic, 82-81, Tuesday night at FAU Gymnasium. It was the second straight last-second win for the Dolphins over the Owls as JU broke a three-game losing streak to improve to 6-7 overall, 2-4 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. Lee hit 8-of-11 shots, including a season-best six three-pointers as JU shot 52 percent for the game.

The Dolphins trailed 81-73 with 1:20 to play in the game, but Lee hit the first of three straight three-pointers to cut the FAU lead to five. Following a missed dunk by Rodney Webb, Lee drilled another three to bring JU to within two with 35 seconds remaining. Aubrey Conerly (Calumet, Ill.) stole Tywain McTyer's pass to set up the Dolphins' game-winning shot. Antonio Cool (Chicago Heights, Ill.) missed a long three, but JU got the ball on an inbounds play with eight seconds remaining. Jesse Kimbrough (Mexia, Texas) found Lee in the corner for the gamewinner. Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) stole the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the game for JU.

Quaintance also added 18 points, six rebounds and five steals for the Dolphins, who dished out a season-best 20 assists. Lee added a career-best six assists, while Kimbrough scored 14 points and matched a career-best with seven assists. JU shot 58 percent in the second half and limited the Owls to just 4-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc for the game.

Mike Bell led Florida Atlantic with 24 points, while Robert Williams scored a season-high 15. Webb added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Owls, who hit 25-of-31 free throws. Both teams grabbed 34 rebounds.

Florida Atlantic erased an early JU lead to take a 40-32 halftime advantage. The Owls extended the lead to 54-41 at the 16:14 mark of the second half, but JU climbed to within two, 58-56, just four minutes later. Florida Atlantic led 75-65 with 5:22 remaining in the game, but the Dolphins closed the game on a 17-6 run.

JU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. against Lipscomb at Swisher Gymnasium. The game will be aired live on Comcast Sports Southeast as the A-Sun Game of the Week. The Dolphins also host Belmont on Monday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m.
