Basketball Drops Lipscomb, 59-48
Jan. 15, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior guard Aubrey Conerly (Calumet, Ill.) tied his season high with 16 points, including going 7-of-9 from the free throw line in the last two minutes, as JU defeated Lipscomb, 58-49, Saturday night at Swisher Gymnasium. The win moved the Dolphins to 7-7 overall, 3-4 in Atlantic Sun Conference play and pushed head coach Hugh Durham to 26th on the all-time Division I wins list, tying Norm Sloan with his 624th career win.
The Dolphins fell behind 39-30 at the 10:26 mark as Lipscomb went on a 9-0 run, capped by an Eddie Ard jumper. JU came back after Mario Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) blocked Ard's next shot attempt to spark a 15-2 run, led by seven points from Conerly. Lipscomb cut the lead to two, but a free throw by Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) and a Jesse Kimbrough (Mexia, Texas) jumper stretched the lead back to five at the 2:48 mark before the Bisons put JU on the line, where they made 10-of-14 over the last two minutes to end the game.
Kimbrough had 14 points and seven rebounds in the contest, as the Dolphins went 5-of-11 from behind the arc. David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) had 12 points and a season-high six rebounds, while Brown added six rebounds and four blocks in 17 minutes off the bench.
JU held the Bisons to 17-of-58 shooting on the night and just 2-of-14 from behind the arc. Cameron Robinson led Lipscomb (8-5, 3-3 A-Sun) with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The two teams traded buckets in the first half, with neither team taking a lead of more than five. A three-pointer by Brian Fisk put the Bisons up 24-21, but a Lee three-point play knotted the teams at 24 just before halftime.
JU returns to action on Monday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. against Belmont at Swisher Gymnasium before heading on the road to Campbell on Thursday, Jan. 20.
