Feb. 4, 2005
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore forward Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla.) led three Dolphins in double figures with 13 points, but Lipscomb made 10-of-20 from behind the arc to defeat JU, 73-63, in Allen Arena Thursday night. The Dolphins fall to 12-9 overall, 8-6 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, but are still just a half-game back of the conference lead. Lipscomb (11-9, 6-7 A-Sun) gets its first win over JU in five tries all-time.
Quaintance also had four assists for JU, which shot 51 percent from the field (26-51) but just 50 percent from the free throw line (9-18). Junior point guard Jesse Kimbrough (Mexia, Texas) directed the JU attack with 11 points and five assists, while junior guard B.J. Surry (Independence, Mo.) added 10 points in his fourth straight start.
Down 10 at the half, JU fell behind by 17 at the 12:50 mark in the second before going on an 11-3 run to pull within nine at 7:40, but Matt Jarboe hit a three and Guyette answered a Quaintance baseline jumper with a three from the corner as the shot clock expired to push the lead back to 13. The Dolphins fought back to 66-58 at the 4:10 mark, but JU could not get another shot to fall until Surry hit a three with 1:20 remaining.
JU's defense could not slow down the Bisons, as Lipscomb shot 52 percent (26-50) in the game. Lipscomb also out-rebounded the Dolphins, 32-23, while knocking down 11-of-14 free throws in the game. The Bisons were led by junior Jason Guyette, who had a career-high 17 points off the bench, and sophomore Brian Fisk, who had 14 points.
Lipscomb broke away in the first half, as the Bisons hit 58 percent (15-26) from the field to push out to a 10-point lead at the break. The Dolphins never had a lead in the game.
The Dolphins face Belmont on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 5:15 p.m. at the Curb Event Center in Nashville.
