Basketball Falls To Mercer, 88-61, In Regular-Season Finale

MACON, Ga. - Sophomore forward Haminn Quaintance led JU with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, but Mercer's James Odoms scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half as the Bears pulled away for an 88-61 victory over the Dolphins in the regular-season finale for both at the University Center in Macon. JU finishes the regular season 15-12 overall, 11-9 in the A-Sun and earns the No. 4 seed in the Sun Trust A-Sun Championship, where the Dolphins will play No. 5 Lipscomb Thursday at 9:15 p.m. Eastern in the Curb Event Center in Nashville live on Comcast Sports Southeast. Seventh-seeded Mercer (16-11, 11-9) will face No. 2 UCF at 2:15 p.m.
Junior forward Antonio Cool added 15 points and six rebounds for the JU, which shot just 4-of-19 from three-point range and 34 percent from the field in the game. The Dolphins shot 24 percent in the second half. Jesse Kimbrough scored all nine of his points in the first half, while Aubrey Conerly dished out six assists but failed to score, as he and B.J. Surry combined to shoot 1-for-19.
Will Emerson scored 17 for Mercer, while Damitrius Coleman posted a triple-double with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 1 assists. The Bears shot 52 percent for the game and hit 7-of-17 three-pointers. Mercer scored 23 points off 16 Dolphin turnovers and out-rebounded JU, 45-37.
Mercer used an 18-5 run to open the second half and never looked back, leading by as much as 32. The Bears closed the first half on a 7-2 run to lead 42-32 at the break. After falling behind 21-9 to open the game, JU used an 11-0 run to pull within 21-20 with 7:41 to play in the half. Andrew Walker hit a pair of free throws, followed by a Wesley Duke dunk and jumpers from Emerson and Duke to push lead back to 29-20.
Game times and final match-ups for the A-Sun Championship will be released by the conference office on Sunday night.
