JU Athletic Department Gets Certified

Aug. 4, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU head coach Cliff Warren and assistant coaches William Faulkner and Winston Neal spent four hours receiving CPR, first aid and prevention of disease transmission certification from Advance Patient Transportation (APT). In two sessions, members of the Dolphin athletic department were instructed by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) Brian Brown and Gilliam Westcott in the New Davis College of Business building.

As stated by the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook - Guideline 1c, certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques (CPR), first aid, and prevention of disease transmission should be required for all athletic personnel associated with practice, competition, skills instruction, and strength and conditioning.

"I think it is very important for everyone on our staff to have this basic knowledge," said Alan Verlander, director of athletics. "You never know when you might have to use it. I can sleep well knowing our staff has been educated on these important tasks."
