Men's hoops heads to Stetson on Sunday

Feb. 17, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - When the Jacksonville men's basketball team arrived on campus at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Dolphins had no time to celebrate their comeback win on Friday night.

Instead, the Dolphins had to get some rest and quickly get ready for Sunday's game at Stetson, set to tipoff at 5 p.m.

"This is a short turnaround and a very tough road trip, but our guys know that they need to get some rest and get focused on the next game," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "We know Stetson is going to come out ready to play and we're going to have to match their intensity."

On Friday night, the Dolphins rallied from a six-point deficit in the final 50 seconds on back-to-back 3-pointers by Ben Smith and Jesse Kimbrough to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Kimbrough scored the first and the last baskets as the Dolphins won their fourth straight game, 101-97 over Mercer.

Smith scored 28 points in the game, hitting a career-high six 3-pointers which is tied for the fourth highest total in JU history. In just over a week, Smith has seen his career high double from 14 against ETSU to the 28 on Friday, with a 20-point outing against Kennesaw State mixed in between.

Kimbrough was the Dolphins rock in the second half, taking control of the offense when it was stuck in neutral. The sixth-year senior scored 11 points, had five assists and five rebounds in the second half, which almost propelled him to a triple-double.

The icing on the cake was his acrobatic 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left that sent the game into overtime. It was so good that it made ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays at #8.

With that win behind them, the Dolphins face a Stetson team that has won two straight at home after a 74-63 win over UNF on Thursday. JU is hot as well, having won four straight and seven of the last eight games.

"Any time you go on the road in this conference, you have to play at the top of your game to have a chance," Warren said.
