In nine seasons, Carson has guided the Dolphins to 14 conference championships, helped 14 throwers earn individual conference titles while also tutoring 30 all-conference performers.
Last season, the JU throws group was a key in securing its seventh straight A-Sun outdoor title by accounting for 63 of the team’s 242 points.
Junior Akeela Bravo and senior Laura Phillips finished in the two top spots in all three events to lead the charge. Bravo recorded 28 points in winning the shot put and hammer to claim the meet’s Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Field Performer honors. Phillips won the discus with a toss of 153’4” in her final A-Sun. Sophomore Sara Schunter and freshman Sally Marie Futch also scored key points to help the cause.
In 2011, Carson was instrumental in the strong final year for senior Ronnisha Hall who earned “Most Outstanding Thrower” at the A-Sun Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She also broke three school records during the season, earn three straight A-Sun Field “Athlete of the Week” honors and compete for JU at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Bloomington, Ind.
Bravo won the discus at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships with a toss of 141’11” before shattering the school record in Tallahassee, Fla. on May 7 with a toss of 153’5”. Carson also helped the throwers as a whole account for 42 points at the A-Sun Indoor Championships.
In 2010, junior Hillary Crook won the shot put at the indoor (46’10.25) and outdoor (44’9.25”) championships in 2010, while her indoor toss also broke the meet record. Junior Laura Phillips set the school record in the discus with a throw of 144’5” at the A-Sun Championships and also broke the program record in the hammer throw (162’8”) at UNF Ospreys Challenge.
In 2009, Carson helped Hall break school records in the shot put and weight throw in the indoor season, while Phillips broke the hammer mark on three different occasions.
Hall also recorded indoor meet record tosses to win the shot put (45’10.75”) and weight throw (59’11”) events at the A-Sun Championship. Crook won the shot put at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships with a toss of 44’6.25”.
In 2008, Crook took home the shot put title and all-conference honors with a toss of 44’09.75” at the A-Sun Indoor Championships. Phillips took fourth in the weight throw at the indoor conference before smashing the school record in the hammer throw (133’) at the UCF Invitational during the outdoor season.
In 2006, Carson helped freshman Shunisha McClinton take home "Most Outstanding Field Performer" at the A-Sun Indoor Track Championship after her toss of 51’6.25" won the weight throw competition. She placed second in shot put with a mark of 42’1.25". McClinton would later dominate the field events at the A-Sun Outdoor Championship, winning the shot put with a throw of 43’8.5". She also took second in the discus with a throw of 126’4" and fourth in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 129’11".
Before joining the Dolphins, Carson spent a season as an assistant track and field coach at Union High School in Tulsa, Okla.
As a collegian, Carson was a two-time All-America selection and Big 12 champion at Oklahoma. In 2001, Carson earned All-America honors in both the discus and indoor shot, while also placing 13th in the outdoor shot at the NCAA Track & Field Championship (53’3"). She was also a two-time Big 12 champion in the discus (2000 & 2001) during her four-year career and formerly held the Oklahoma and Big 12 meet record in the discus. Following her collegiate career, Carson competed at the 2001 USA Track & Field Nationals, placing 10th in the discus. Her lifetime-best throw in the discus is 197’1".
The Marlow, Okla., native captured state titles in the discus during her senior and sophomore seasons at Marlow High School and added another in the shot put as a senior.
