The JU cross country teams showed the potential for good things to come at the JU Short Course Duals as the Dolphin’s women won their side of meet, while junior Andrew Maedel helped the men’s team to a second place finish on Friday afternoon in the season opener on campus.

The JU women had the top three individual finishers in junior Elsabeth Goshu (12:39.87), freshman Amaila Vogler (12:59.15) and junior Kelli Midden (13:15.17) en route to a perfect 4-0 mark. The Dolphins finished ahead of Stetson (3-1), North Florida (2-2), Savannah State (1-3) and Bethune Cookman (0-4).

Maedel won the individual title on the men’s side with a time of 17:38.24 to help the Dolphins to a 2-1 record for the second place finish. Savannah State won the men’s team portion with a 3-0 mark, while Stetson (1-2) and Bethune-Cookman (0-3) finished behind JU, respectively.

“It was a good way to start the season,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “Andrew was the clear leader for our program today. It was nice to see a JU uniform cross first. We look forward to the men’s team improving as they move through the season to the A-Sun Championship.

“The women’s results showed the depth of our program. I look forward to having our full squad out there in two weeks at Florida.”

Freshman Morgan Keel placed eighth with a time of 13:36.77, while senior Tiffanie Saxton was ninth (14:08) to round out the JU women’s team.

On the men’s side, freshman Zach Smith took 11th with a time of 19:37.91 and junior Gene Sansfield placed 15th after running a time of 20:17.14. Senior Clay Garrett ran a time of 20:23.68 for 17th place, while freshman Devin Resko finished 19th with a time of 20:33.29. Sophomore Patrick Abbey (21:18.22) and freshman Luis Belman (21:50) rounded out the rest of the Dolphins.

The Dolphin’s women will be back in action at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational on Sept. 18 in Gainesville, Fla. The men’s team will hit the path again on Oct. 16 in DeLand, Fla. for the Sodexho Stetson Invitational.
