The JU men’s cross country team hopes to use the momentum from the last two meets to produce its best finish of the season when they compete at the Atlantic Sun Championships on Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Dolphins want to build off their best finish since 2000 at the conference meet when JU placed 10th last season.

“We have shown improvement each week in training,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “I look forward to seeing the best performance of the year at the A-Sun meet. Andrew (Maedel) and Gene (Sarsfield) will be running in their last races in a JU uniform so I know motivation will be high.”

Last time out, Maedel ran a time of 28:22 (36th) in the first 8K race of the season to lead the Dolphins to a 12th place finish at the Sodexho Stetson Invitational on Oct. 15.

Sarsfield posted a time of 30:45 for 67th place, while freshman Sidney Houting finished 84th with a time of 32:34. Freshman Esteban Mendez (32:50) and junior Patrick Abbey (34:55) rounded out the rest of the JU runners.

At the 2009 A-Sun Championships, Maedel paced the Dolphins - despite running the last two miles in his socks because of injury - with a time of a time of a 29:16 (56th). Sarsfield ran a time of 31:50 (69th), while Abbey (35:01) closed out the day for JU.
