Cross country closes out FLRunners.com Invitational
The JU men’s and women’s cross country squads put together two solid efforts Friday evening at the FLRunners.com Invitational in Titusville, Fla.
On the men’s side, freshman Nick Dale ran a time of 16:44.80 (6th) in helping the Dolphins to a fifth-place finish. Freshman Andrew Merrill was the next highest finisher at 17th in 17:30.90.
“I am very happy with today,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “Nick looked real good. All of the freshmen men learned good lessons today.”
Junior Esteban Mendez ran a time of 18:30.40 (32nd), while freshman James Trebilock had a mark of 19:50.60 (49th). Freshman Will Tirado rounded out the men’s side in 20:05.30 (52nd)
In the women’s portion, junior LaTonya Payne ran a time of 20:04.40 (17th), while senior Bienna Freeman was not far behind her in 20:08.90 (18th). Senior Alicia Gard-Kaminkow ran a time of 22:18.60 (45th) to wrap the group.
“I'd go to war with LaTonya any day,” Grigg said. “Here is a kid that ran lead off on our NCAA East prelim 4x100-meter relay and for her to almost break 20 minutes won't be lost on those people who know track. It is a really strong run. Bienna and Alicia have both been running for less than a month so they will round into shape in the next month.”
Both JU cross country squads will be back in action at FSU Invitational Oct 5, in Tallahassee, Fla.
