Women Take Fourth, Men Tie for Eighth at A-Sun Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville women’s and men’s cross country teams competed to fourth and eighth place finishes at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Nashville, Tenn.

After finishing third in 2012, the women placed fourth with 140 points. The Fins were behind host and winners Lipscomb (32), No. 2 ETSU (84) and No. 3 North Florida (92). The men tied for eighth with Stetson with 273 points, both ahead of last-place finisher Kennesaw State (303). Lipscomb ran away with the title with 26 points.

For the women in the 5k, senior Svenja Meyer crossed second of 82 runners in 17:37.19. Meyer, named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team, was only behind first-placed Kelly Perzanowski of Florida Gulf Coast (17:21.02). Freshman Katy Solis, named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen Team, finished 15th (18:48.95), Caitlin Marino was 25th (19:05.35), Mary Kate Ponder crossed 45th (19:52.22) and Shadaey Campbell was the final Dolphin to cross in 65th (20:33.63).

"Svenja was great today,” said Head Coach Ron Grigg. “She ran with confidence and executed her plan well. Caitlin was solid as always. It wasn't our best team effort, but we got the job done.  Our new people will learn and grow from this."

On the men’s side, Nicholas Dale led the Fins with a 56th place finish in 28:00.39 of 79 runners. Andrew Merrill was close behind in 61st (28:21.13), Kyle Crews crossed 65th (29:09.28), Jeremy McDermet finished 67th (29:20.24) and Balaram Khara placed 72nd (30:49.01).

"The men showed steady improvement all year. This was the best team finish in thirteen years. I am really proud of their growth and effort.”
