After struggling during the fall season, the JU men’s golf team has put together some solid results this spring.
On Monday, the Dolphins will look to put together their best performance of the season as they participate in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals on the line on the par-72 Keith Hills Country Club. “When we started the spring, our goal was to be ready to compete at conference,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We have made steady progress throughout the season, but we haven’t had all five guys firing at the same time. Hopefully we’re ready for our biggest test of the season.” Against an increasingly difficult schedule, the Dolphins have put together three top five finishes this spring. JU took home third place at the JU Invitational, close behind top 50 ranked teams Lamar and Kentucky. Two weeks later, the Dolphins finished four at the Troy Invitational, before taking home second place at the North-South Intercollegiate. One of the key contributors to the Dolphins upswing this spring has been the play of seniors Josh Kinsey and Christian Martin. The senior duo ranks one and two on the team’s stroke average list, with Martin shooting par or better seven times this spring. Kinsey has been Mr. Consistency, finishing in the top 10 three times this season along with five top 20 finishes. “Our success this spring has been because of the play of our two seniors,” Blackburn said. “They have raised their game to a new level and been leaders for everyone on the team.” Joining the lineup at conference will be junior Justin Jones, sophomore Stephen Healy and freshman Bobby Fredeking. Jones had the second best finish for JU at the Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational two weeks ago. Healy has shown flashes of brilliance, posting three rounds of par or better this season. Fredeking had four top 20 finishes during his inaugural campaign, but has struggled in the last two events. “Everyone in our lineup has the ability to post a good score for us,” Blackburn said. “For us to contend, we need everyone playing up to their ability for three rounds.” The Dolphins, seeking their second title in the last four years, will tee off beginning at 8:45 a.m. Fans can follow the live scoring via Golfstat.com. |
