The Dolphins posted a team score of 300 in the second round to fall into a tie for eighth at 14-over par with USC Upstate.
Kinsey’s round has him just three shots out of the individual lead, trailing Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume and Kennesaw State’s Michael Tulacz.
Campbell posted a two-under par round of 286 to retain its lead in the team competition at 11-under par.
“We made a few mistakes out there today and this golf course will punish you for those,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “Josh had another solid round, giving himself a lot of opportunities. If he can do that again tomorrow, he will be among the leaders on the back nine.”
Kinsey’s even-par round opened with a bogey at the first, but 11 straight pars righted his round before a birdie at the 13th got him back to even. Five pars later, he was in the clubhouse with a 72 and one of 15 players in red numbers after two rounds.
Bobby Fredeking had his best round in more than a month with a one-over par, 73. The round was a roller-coaster affair, starting with a bogey at the fifth and a birdie at the sixth.
Sitting at even-par, Fredeking hit a rough stretch from No. 8 through 10, going bogey-double bogey-bogey to fall to four-over par.
He rallied late, finishing with birdies on No. 14, 17 and 18 to move into a tie for 23rd at four-over par.
Sophomore Stephen Healy shot a four-over par, 76, to fall into a tie with Fredeking for 23rd place at four-over after 36 holes. Healy got off to a solid start with a birdie at the fourth, but a bogey-bogey-double bogey finish to the front nine had him make the turn at three-over par.
A pair of bogeys with just one birdie on the back nine finished his round as he fell 12 spots in the individual standings.
Rounding out the team scoring was Justin Jones and Christian Martin, who each shot a seven-over par 79. Jones had back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth to get to two-under par, but a pair of double bogeys quickly unraveled his round as he dropped into a tie for 42nd at nine-over par.
Martin’s round was plagued with five bogeys, a triple bogey and only two birdies for his 79, putting him in 53rd place at 16-over par.
The Dolphins will wrap up their 2009 season on Wednesday with the final round, going off the 10th tee at 8:45 a.m. with USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.
