Men’s golf opens 2009-10 season at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate
The JU men’s golf team will open its 2009-10 season on Friday as they play in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate.

The three-day event is the first of five events in the fall for the Dolphins as JU looks to gain momentum in head coach Mike Blackburn’s second season.

“I know the guys are ready to play and get into tournament action again,” Blackburn said. “We’ve had some really good competition in the qualifying leading up to this event. We’ve got a young team, but they have a tremendous amount of talent.”

JU’s lineup will feature three players with collegiate experience – senior Justin Jones, junior Gavin St. John Frost and sophomore Bobby Fredeking, along with a pair of newcomers – Jacksonville natives Jamey Salmon and Will Braude.

Fredeking comes into the season after a stellar summer season. He finished runner-up at the Jacksonville Amateur and has been posting low scored throughout the off-season.

Jones has regained his form that led him to be the Dolphins leader in stroke average after last fall. Frost qualified for the team after playing solidly throughout the preseason.

Salmon was impressive throughout the qualifying, finishing third on the team in the six rounds. Braude, a sophomore, was right behind in fourth as he begins his collegiate career.

“I’ve been really pleased with the progress we’ve made the first few weeks of practice,” Blackburn said. “This group has shown the ability to put some low scores on the board and there is a good chemistry with all the guys in this group.”
