With a five-under par round in the afternoon, the JU men’s golf team is in a tie for sixth entering the final round of the Savannah Mizuno Intercollegiate.

JU opened the tournament in a tie for 12th with a round of 14-over par, 302, in the morning before three Dolphins posted under par round in the afternoon to move up the leaderboard.

Bobby Fredeking and Justin Jones lead the Dolphins in a tie for 16th at even-par, 144.

East Carolina leads the 15-team event at 12-under par, 564, led by David Watkins who shot back-to-back 68s to hold a two-shot lead in the individual competition.

“I was really pleased with how we played in the afternoon,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We threw away a lot of shots in the morning, but everyone played solid in the afternoon, which is a good sign for tomorrow’s round.”

The Dolphins are tied with Furman and Kennesaw State at nine-over par, 585, while sitting just three shots out of fourth place.

Jones was steady all day for JU, carding a one-over par 73 in the morning and evening it out with a one-under par 71 in the afternoon. Fredeking opened with a four-over par 76 and wrapped it up with a career-best four-under par 68.

Will Braude made the best of the afternoon round as well, carding a one-under par 71 in the second round after shooting a five-over par 77 in the opening 18. He’s tied for 32nd at four-over par, 148.

Gavin St. John Frost shot a 76 in the morning and followed with a 73 to tie for 36th at five-over par, 149.

Taylor Szyndlar shot a 79 in the morning and a 76 in the afternoon to sit in 69th at 11-over par, 155. Playing in his first collegiate event, Trey Douglas shot a pair of 81s to sit in 79th at 18-over par, 162.

The Dolphins will tee off in an all Atlantic Sun Conference group on Tuesday with Florida Gulf Coast and Kennesaw State at 8 a.m.
