Men’s golf tied for 17th at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
The JU men’s golf team got off to sluggish start, shooting a 22-over par in the first round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on the par-72, Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

Sophomore Bobby Fredeking carded a four-over par 76 in the opening round to finish in a tie for 43rd.

Vanderbilt leads the 18-team competition at two-over par, holding a one shot lead over Ole Miss and Memphis. Middle Tennessee State’s Kent Bulle leads the individual competition after a five-under par 67.

“We got off to a rough start today, but we kept battling,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We made some mistakes today and we’re disappointed, but we’re going to come back out tomorrow and see if we can’t make up some shots.”

Fredeking opened the round with a double bogey on the 10th hole and got back to one-over par after a birdie at the 11th. Back-to-back bogeys at 17 and 18 sent him to his back nine at three-over par.

A birdie on the par-3 second hole got him back to two-over par, but three bogeys over a four hole stretch was his undoing as he signed for a 76.

Stephen Healy carded a five-over par 77 to sit in a tie for 55th. Healy made just one birdie on the round and had six bogeys.

Gavin St. John Frost shot a six-over par 78 that was a roller coaster round to tie for 68th. His front nine had a pair of double bogeys, a pair of bogeys before a birdie on the 18th. His back nine was much smoother, with just two bogeys and a birdie on the ninth, his final hole of the day.

Taylor Szyndlar is tied for 77th after a seven-over par 79. The freshman made the turn at six-over par and was under par for the back nine until a double bogey at the eighth, his 17th hole, finished his round.

Trey Douglas posted a 13-over par 85 and is in 97th. The Ponte Vedra Beach native made the turn at four-over par, but two double bogeys and a triple bogey in the last five holes marred his scorecard.

The Dolphins will tee off in the second round on Monday, with the final round set for Tuesday.
