No. 17 Georgia leads the 15-team event at nine-under par when play was suspended, sporting a 15-shot lead over Radford. Georgia’s Russell Henley, ranked sixth in the country, and Radford’s Michael Wade are tied to the individual lead at four-under par.
“I’m pleased with how we played today,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “Justin has played 27 solid holes and is doing a good job of taking it one shot at a time. Of course, there is room for improvement and we feel very good about a strong finish tomorrow.”
Jones is tied for fifth in the individual competition at two-under par. Starting his first round on the fourth hole, he opened with five straight pars before a birdie at the ninth and one at the 12th got him to two-under par.
There were some hiccups though. A bogey at the 13th was quickly answered with a birdie at the 14th. He followed up a bogey at the 16th with a birdie at the 17th, before a bogey on the second hole (his 17th), put the finishing touches on a one-under par, 71.
Going right into the second round, Jones opened it with a bogey on the fourth but got back into red numbers with an eagle on the par-5 sixth. He got to two-under par for the round with a birdie at the 10th, but gave that shot back with a bogey on the 11th.
Jones’ stellar opening round led JU to a 10-over par 298 in the first round. The Dolphins sit in sixth place at 16-over par when play resumes, trailing Georgia by 25 shots, but only 10 shots behind Radford for second place.
Stephen Healy and Gavin Frost are tied for 35th at six-over par. Healy opened the tournament with a two-over par, 74, but is four-over par 14 holes into his second round. Frost struggled to a six-over par 78 in the first round, but is even-par for his second round – finishing the day with three birdies in his final four holes.
Taylor Szyndlar shot a five-over par 77 in the first round and is three-over par after back-to-back birdies to end play, tying him for 45th.
Bobby Fredeking shot a four-over par 76 in the first round and is five-over par through 12 holes of his second round, placing him in a tie for 52nd.
