Men’s golf takes third at the Don Benbow Invitational

Stephen Healy’s two-round total of one-over par, 143, led the JU men’s golf team to a third place finish at the Don Benbow Invitational on the par-71 Jacksonville Beach Golf Course.

Healy tied for third place in the individual competition after holding the overnight lead after shooting a three-under par 68 in the first round. He closed with a four-over par 75 to fall back into a tie for third – five shots behind Armstrong Atlantic’s Matt Motes, who won the event at four-under par.

Armstrong Atlantic won the 14-team event by one shot over Florida Atlantic at seven-over par. The Dolphins shot a seven-over par 291 in the first round and followed it up with a 12-over par 296 in the final round.

“We played well at times and were in position to contend for the title,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “This experience is something we can build on as the spring continues and we face tougher competition in the coming weeks.”

Justin Jones led the Dolphins in the final round with a one-under par, 70, to tie for ninth in the individual competition at three-over par.

Gavin St. John Frost shot matching three-over par 74s to tie for 18th at six-over par, 148. Taylor Szyndlar opened with a three-over par 74, but shot a six-over par 77 in the final round, to finish at nine-over par and in a tie for 26th.

Bobby Fredeking opened with a four-over par 75 and shot a nine-over par 80 in the final round to tie for 41st at 13-over par.

The Dolphins are off until they face Michigan State in a head-to-head match at the end of the month. JU’s next tournament is set for April 10 as they play in the UK Bluegrass Invitational.
