Men’s golf to face Michigan State at Timuquana Country Club
After an 18-day layoff, the JU men’s golf team will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they face Michigan State in an 18-hole match at the Timuquana Country Club, starting at 12:30 p.m.

JU has finished in the top seven in three of its four events this spring, with its best finish being third place at the Don Benbow Invitational at the Jax Beach Golf Course.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to play a nationally recognized program like Michigan State at one of the best facilities in Jacksonville,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “The members at Timuquana have been gracious enough to host us and we’re ready to get back on the course in competition.”

Blackburn’s starting five for the event is Bobby Fredeking, Justin Jones, Stephen Healy, Taylor Szyndlar and Will Braude, who was the Timuquana club champion a few years ago. Trey Douglas will be playing as an individual.

The hottest JU golfer is Healy. He is coming off a tie for third place at the Don Benbow Invitational, carding a career-best three-under par 68 in the first round.

“Stephen’s game is starting to come around now,” Blackburn said. “We’ve been looking for him to have a breakthrough and he did our last time out.”

Fredeking leads the team with a 74.19 stroke average, followed by Salmon at 75.42.

The Dolphins solid play this spring has moved JU within six games of .500, sporting a record of 48-54-4 entering the weekend, looking for their first winning season in two years.

“We’re making progress every day,” Blackburn said. “Our goal is to keep getting better and to get in contention. This 18-hole match is going to be good for us to get back into competition with a lot on the line.”
