The JU men’s golf team improved its score each round, shooting a 292 in the final round, to finish in 15th at place at the UK Bluegrass Invitational.

Justin Jones led the Dolphins by tying for 29th at four-over par, carding an even-par 71 in the final round. He had the low round for JU in the first and third round, with his 71 tying the second-lowest round of the spring season.

The Dolphins opened the tournament with a 14-over par 298 in the first round, followed with a 12-over par 296 in the second round and finished with an eight-over par 292 in the final round.

Murray State rallied to win the 24-team event, carding a four-over par 288 in the final round to pass second round leader Miami (Ohio) and holding off Memphis and Auburn by one shot. Auburn’s John Sternbridge won the individual title at seven-under par, topping Memphis’ Jonathan Fly by one.

“The conditions were perfect for scoring this week and we just never were able to take advantage,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “This was good preparation for next week’s conference tournament.”

Jones opened the tournament with a one-over par 72 before shooting a three-over par 74 in the second round. He finished with his best round of the week to tie for 29th.

Bobby Fredeking tied for 72nd at 10-over par, 223, posting rounds of 75, 74 and 74. Gavin Frost tied for 78th at 11-over par, recovering from an opening round 77 with a two-over par 73 and a three-over par 74.
