Strong finish for JU at the Gator Invitational
The JU men’s golf team wrapped up the SunTrust Gator Invitational with some momentum by posting a 15-over par, 295, while finishing 14th in the event.
Junior Jamey Salmon tied for the second-best round of the day, carding a one-under par 69 to move into a tie for 40th.
“We struggled on Saturday, but I was really proud of how we responded today,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We did a good job of focusing on one shot at a time, especially Jamey. He had a great round today.”
Starting on the 18th hole in the shotgun start, Salmon made par on his first hole before two bogeys marred his score on the front nine.
A birdie-bogey start to the back nine left him at 2-over par with six holes to play. Undaunted, Salmon played those holes three-under par, rolling in birdies at Nos. 12, 14 and 17 (his final hole) to post the red number score.
Freshman Nick Torrance put together a solid finish as well, tying for 55th after shooting a three-over par 73 in the final round. Brett McKinnon finished with a four-over par 74 to tie for 66th. Trey Douglas had a nine-over par, 79, to finish 72nd while Brian Phelan shot an 81 to finish in 75th place.
The Dolphins are off until the end of the month when they participate in the Hayt Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club.
