Jan. 31, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Russell Knox begins his final semester of college golf a couple of weeks early as he will tee it up at the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational from Feb. 1-3.

The Jones Cup was first contested in 2001 as a prelude to the 38th Walker Cup Match. This event brings together many of the finest amateurs from the United States and abroad for three days of competition and camaraderie.

"This is a great opportunity for Russell to get his game ready for the final four months of the season," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "To have this opportunity to play against the best in amateur golf on a challenging golf course will be a good test to prepare him not only for this season, but beyond."

The Frederica Golf Club, a par-72 golf course located in Sea Island, Ga., will host the event. D.J. Trahan won the event in 2001, with several PGA Tour players playing in the event in the three times the tournament has been held.

Among the TOUR pros that have teed it up at the Jones Cup is Lucas Glover, Bubba Watson, Luke Donald, Ty Tryon, Brandt Snedeker and Casey Wittenburg.

The field is a who's who of amateur golf. Prominent names that will battle for the title are Rhys Davies, Ryan Hybl, Chris Kirk, Luke List, Buddy Marucci, Trip Kuehne, Dalton Melnyk, Sam Saunders, Brendon Todd, Gator Todd and Dawie Van der Walt.
