SPARTANBURG, S.C. -
The Jacksonville men's golf team posted a 36-hole total of three-over par to sit in fifth place after the first day of the Wofford Invitational presented by VAULT on the par-72 Carolina Country Club.
JU's Russell Knox opened with a one-over par 73 before firing a six-under par 66 to tie for third in the individual competition at five-under par, 139.
Western Carolina's Andres Cuenca leads the individual competition at eight-under par, 136, after posting rounds of 70 and 66. Elon leads the 14-team event with a five-under par total of 571.
"We didn't have a good first round, but we came back strong in the second round," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "We've got a lot of ground to make up in 18 holes, so it's important for us to get off to a good start to have a chance at the title."
The Dolphins opened the day with a seven-over par round of 295 to finish in ninth place before posting a four-under par round of 284 to jump into fifth, just eight shots out of the lead.
In the opening round, JU got one-over par rounds of 73 from Knox and Matt Kleinrock, with Joshua Kinsey adding a two-over par 74. Duncan Stewart shot a three-over par 75 to round out the four counting scores. The Dolphins dropped Jamie Kennedy's eight-over par 80.
In the second round, Knox caught fire, posting a six-under par 66 to finish in a tie for third. Kleinrock carded an even-par round of 72 to finish in a tie for 20th at one-over par, 145.
Kinsey equaled his morning 74 with another in the afternoon to tie for 34th. Stewart improved by a shot, tying Kinsey's 74, to finish in a tie for 41st at five-over par, 149.
Kennedy turned his day around by carding an even-par 72 in the afternoon 18, allowing JU to drop one of the 74s, and tying the senior for 52nd at eight-over par, 152.
The Dolphins look to rally for their fifth title of the season on Tuesday morning.
