Peter DeLuca wins MAAC’s “Rookie of the Week” award
Freshman goalie Peter DeLuca was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s “Rookie of the Week” after tying a career high with 20 saves against No. 7 Duke, the league announced on Monday.

DeLuca recorded a 20-save game for the second time this season, making six stops in the fourth quarter alone against the defending national-champion Blue Devils on Sunday. The netminder raised his season save percentage 16 points by virtue of the contest, improving his mark to .518 while lowering his goals against average to 11.06.

After holding Duke to just 10 goals on 46 shots faced, DeLuca and the rest of the Dolphins will now gear up for its first-ever appearance in the MAAC Tournament.

Fourth-seeded JU (5-9, 3-3 in conference) will face top-seeded Siena (11-4, 5-1) in the semifinal round on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Canisius’ Demske Sports Complex. After that contest, No. 2 Marist will face third-seeded Detroit in the other semifinal.

“Peter’s been our starter since his first game as a freshman and I’ve been pleased with his progress throughout the season,” JU head coach Matt Kerwick said. “He’s been a reliable presence for us in the cage and we’re hoping he continues to improve as we enter our conference tournament against a tough field.”

DeLuca posted 13 saves alone in the first half alone and held Duke to a 0-for-3 showing in man-up situations. He tied his previous high for saves in a game that was first set against Robert Morris on March 9. He has played all but 45:22 in the cage for the Dolphins this season, compiling a 5-9 record.

The Millersville, Pa. native is the second JU player to be named “Rookie of the Week,” following two-time winner Rob Moore.
