13 score as JU hammers Mercer
Donovan Lange, Dan McNulty and freshman Austin Curtis all scored two goals each and 13 Dolphins got on the board at Jacksonville beat Mercer 16-5 at D.B. Milne Field Saturday.
The Dolphins (3-3) got off to a 4-0 start when TJ Kenary, Ari Waffle, Max Gurowski and freshman Quint Miller all scored before the game was two minutes into the second quarter.
McNulty and Lange both scored their two goals in the remainder of the half as JU went to the break with an 8-2 lead.
Cameron Mann, Chip Young, Sam Haus, Rob Wertz, Curtis (with back-to-back goals), Jeremy Tissenbaum and Pratt Rexford all got in on the act in the second half.
The balanced scoring is one of the team’s objectives, according to coach Guy Van Arsdale.
“That’s what we’re after,’’ he said. “We try to share the ball and distribute and the more we do that the better off we are.’’
Face off specialist Will Vogt and JU goal keeper Peter DeLuca each had six ground balls for the Dolphins while Kenary had four. Curtis caused two turnovers.
DeLuca played 54:04 minutes and had 12 saves. He was spelled by Alex DiScala who recorded his first save of the season.
The team went through a week of intense practice this week and it paid off.
“We played a lot harder more consistently,’’ Van Arsdale said. “And we did a much better job on the ground balls which has been our focus all week long. I was pleased with that part and it’s a step in the right direction.’’ The Dolphins had 48 in the game to Mercer’s (0-7) 40.
Van Arsdale said he saw signs the team is heading where he believes it should be.
“Today was better in that we’re heading where we want to head but we’re not there yet,’’ he said. “Next weekend when we start conference play, it’s good to know we are heading in the right direction.’’
JU travels to Marist Saturday to begin its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season.
