JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team is ramping up as the days count down to the beginning of the season on Feb. 8. After the Dolphins travel to Durham, N.C. to tangle with the 2013 national champion Duke Blue Devils in each team’s season opener, Jacksonville returns to the River City for another huge clash. On Feb. 16 in a doubleheader that will receive live primetime coverage from the NBC Sports Network, JU will take the field against perennial power Notre Dame at 7 p.m., followed shortly thereafter by a meeting between Ohio State and UMass.
“We really could not be here, would not be here without the support of Moe’s Southwest Grill,” said Jacksonville University Athletic Director Brad Edwards. “I also want NBC Sports for their tremendous support of this event. Last year we had well over 100,000 viewers, and they have so much faith and confidence in this event that they’ve now moved it to a primetime slot on an Olympic Sunday.”
The weekend goes much beyond just the doubleheader on Sunday night however. A youth lacrosse tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday, and local high schools take the field on Monday as the ever-growing sport of lacrosse continues to gain steam in Northeast Florida.
“This is the only event like this in the country this year,” Head Coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “The only place where this is happening is right here in Jacksonville so we’re extremely honored and excited to host this and play an opponent like Notre Dame.”
Tickets for the Moe’s Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic are available now on Ticketmaster.com or at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office. Tickets can be purchased in person at the arena or by calling (904) 630-3900.
