Oxlade, who brings 26 years of experience as both a competitor and coach, will assist in the coaching of the varsity and oversee the development of the novice boats for JU’s men’s and women’s teams.
Last season, Oxlade played an integral role in the historic run of the Men’s Varsity 8 to the IRA Championships for the first time in the program’s 54 -year history. He assisted in the coaching of the varsity crews to repeat wins at the Murphy Cup (V8) and the FIRA State Championships (Men’s & Overall).
In 2009, he coached the Men’s Novice 8 to a repeat win at FIRA’s and a semi- final appearance at SIRA. He served as assistant coach to the JU varsity men’s team which repeated as FIRA champions and won silver medals at both SIRA and Dad Vail in the Junior Varsity 8.
In his first season at JU, Oxlade’s Freshman/Novice crews became state champions in men’s and women’s eights at the FIRA’s. He also guided the Women’s Varsity 4 to a fourth place finish at the SIRA’s and the Women’s Varsity Pair to a semi-final appearance at Dad Vails.
Oxlade joined the Dolphins in 2007 following his emigration to the U.S. from the United Kingdom. He has had successful coaching spells in both the UK and Australia. He was an assistant coach for Geelong Grammar School (Aus) in 1995-96, who won the Victorian state championships in the Women’s 8 and 4. He moved to the First Coast following five years as Director of Rowing at Oundle School, a prestigious private boarding school in eastern England.
His crews have won at the National Schools regatta (UK) in 1998 and 2006 and he has coached crews at all the major regattas in the UK, including appearances at Henley Royal Regatta consistently from 1998 until 2007.
He successfully coached two athletes to Junior International Representation in 2005 and 2007 and was victorious following his selection as coach of England’s Junior Men’s Eight at the Home Countries International Regatta between 2005 and 2007.
Oxlade was the boat club president for the University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne from 1996-99, during which time he became the northern universities single sculls champion and trialled for the GB national team. He received his bachelor’s degree in Sport & Exercise Science in 1999. He went on to earn his master’s in Physical Education from the University of Surrey, Roehampton in 2002.
He lives in Jacksonville with his wife, Stacey, and daughter, Lara.
