In his first season with the Dolphins, Muhl changed the focus of the women's rowing training and saw the results of his plans come to fruition at the end of the season. The Dolphin women reclaimed their FIRA State Title in Women's Overall Points and had three boats (WV8, WV4, WF4) reach the semifinals at the Dad Vail Regatta. Prior to JU, Muhl served as an assistant varsity coach and director of operations for the Oklahoma Sooner women’s rowing program. During his time at OU, he dealt with all aspects of the program including arranging team and recruit travel while also training and coaching openweight rowers. Prior to Oklahoma, Coach Muhl spent one year at UCF where he coached the Women’s Varsity Lightweight program. Muhl helped the LW8 earn a No. 3 national ranking during the season after defeating perennial lightweight power Radcliffe on its home course. He also led the boat to a gold medal at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta with significant open water en route to a nomination for 2007-08 Lightweight “Coach of the Year.” Before joining the UCF rowing staff, Muhl spent three seasons at Cal as the assistant coach and director of operations for the men's rowing team. During his time with the Golden Bears, the program won Men’s Varsity 8 and Men’s Freshmen 8 national titles, a team national championship and Pac-10 Conference titles for team and individual boats. Prior to Cal, Muhl spent the 2004 season as head coach of the Iowa Men's Rowing Club after serving four years as an assistant coach with the program. He began his coaching career as the head novice men’s coach with the Northwestern Rowing Club from 1999-03, where he helped the men to a second-place finish in the Midwest Sprints and a fourth-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta. Muhl received his bachelor's degree in Portuguese and political science from Iowa in 1997 before earning his master's in business administration from Loyola University Chicago in 1999.
