JU graduate Montia Rice came back to the Dolphins in August, 2010, as assistant men’s coach.
After beginning his rowing career at the prestigious St. Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, N.J., Rice was recruited to JU where he rowed all four years. He found much success by winning several titles including gold at FIRA, gold at SIRA and medaling at Dad Vail’s. He was a two-year captain for the Dolphins and spent summers at the Penn Athletic Rowing Club.
Rice, who graduated from JU in 2006 with a BS in history and a minor in English, coached the Dolphins in 2006-07 before heading to Gainesville in the fall of 2008 and a position at Florida.
In his first year there, he led the Novice Men’s 4+ to a third-place finish at both FIRA and SIRA. After two successful years as novice men’s coach, he was promoted to varsity men’s head coach and last year led the team to silver in the Men’s Championship 4+ at Head of the Hooch and a bronze medal at States in both Men’s 4+ and 8. The season ended with the Varsity 8 reaching the semifinals at Dad Vail, missing the petit final by less than a second.
