The JU rowing teams put an end to the fall season with tremendous momentum as the Dolphins captured 11 medals and the Virginia Fox Collegiate Overall Team Point Trophy at The Head of the South on Saturday at the Augusta Rowing Club.
JU, which tallied 21 medals in three fall races, had 11-of-18 boats medal (six men, five women) as the squads made their final preparations going into the spring. Among the awards were seven gold (Men’s Championship 8, Women’s Championship 8, Women’s Championship 4, Men’s Lightweight 8, Men’s Freshman 4, Women’s Freshman 4, Men’s Pair “B”), two silver (Women’s Championship 4, Men’s Lightweight 4) and two bronze (Women’s Lightweight 4, Men’s Pair “C”). “As an entire program, we had a pretty good weekend,” said JU director of rowing/head men’s coach Jim Mitchell. “All of our novice boats competed for the first time in the fall and our teams did very well. This weekend gave us a glimpse of where JU rowing is heading. “As the men's head coach, I’m really proud of how they competed and how they have handled things throughout the fall. Our Championship boats faced some tough competition in back-to-back weeks and showed a lot of maturity. The Lightweights faced really tough boats as well and they did what they had to do. Our Freshman/Novice were really impressive and showed us that our future is bright.” “This was the first weekend we had all of our boats competing and they all did a tremendous job,” said JU women’s head coach Anna Talucci. “Our Championship boats faced nationally ranked competition last weekend, but we built off of the experience and turned it into great results. This week’s success will definitely give us something to build on as we prepare for the spring.” The Women’s Freshman 8 with coxswain Leigh Taylor, Jenna Manis, Lynn Samatulski, Allison Justice, Lauren Leone, Lydia Erdelt, Marina Arishina, Emma Fowler and Sarah Willats finished fifth with a time of 19:24.60.
