In its final tune up for Dad Vails, the JU rowing program got a good glimpse of where they stand after having solid performances at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on Saturday and Sunday in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Among the six boats competing, the Men’s Junior Varsity 8 earned a silver medal in the Grand Final to finish second overall in a large and talented field. The Men’s Varsity 8 was the only other Dolphin boat to reach the grand final but placed fifth to narrowly miss a medal.

“Our biggest result of the weekend was a silver medal in the Junior Varsity 8,” said JU head men’s coach Jim Mitchell. “Our guys raced a great race in the grand final against competition similar to what we expect to see in the finals of Dad Vails. These guys showed some real skill and toughness this weekend, and still have plenty of speed to gain before we go to Philly.

“The Varsity 8 won their heat and semi-final before finishing 5th in the grand final. The guys rowed excellent races in the heats and semis. In the grand final, we lost a little composure in a hotly contested race and just came up short. I think we learned a lot from that race. Now, we have three weeks to capitalize on our learning experience as we will see most of these crews in the finals of Dad Vails.”

In a strong women’s field, the Women’s Varsity 4 placed fourth in the C Semifinal, the Women’s Novice 8 finished fourth in the Petite Final and the Women’s Varsity 8 finished sixth in the Petite Final.

“It is a great accomplishment to see our crews be competitive against top programs,” said JU women’s head coach Anna Talucci. “This is just another step in our analysis of the year before we finish things up at Dad Vails. We are going to see a lot of these same crews and now we know what we need to work on to try and improve.”
