JU rowing to compete in 71st annual Dad Vail Regatta

JU rowing will send five boats to compete in the prestigious Dad Vail Regetta this Friday & Saturday, on the Schulykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The Men’s Varsity 8, the Men’s Junior Varsity 8, the the Women’s Varsity 4, the Women’s Freshman/Novice 4 and the Women’s Pair will compete in the 71st annual regatta, which features more than 100 colleges and 3,300 rowers from the United States and Canada.

The event will showcase 498 events and 19 different race categories with qualifying heats on Friday. Schools qualify in the initial races will move on to semifinal heats on Saturday, with the event finals being held late Saturday.

Due to weather conditions in the Philadelphia area, races on Friday, May 8 will be 1,500-meter time trials.

The Women’s Varsity 4 with coxswain Jamie Goldstein, Stephanie Bechtold, Danielle Fournier, Jenna Barker and Jill Carmody will start things off at 8:40 a.m. against the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), Sacred Heart, Old Dominion, Loyola and Delaware. The top three finishers from the six heats will move on to three semifinals on Saturday (9:24-9:38 a.m.). The top two from each semifinal will compete for the Margaret McNiff Trophy in the Final at 3:10 p.m.

The Men’s Varsity 8 with coxswain Tom Richards, Dylan Kosten, Richmond Jones, Eric Negaard, Bradley Woodrum, Issac LaCount, Isaiah LaCount and Tyler Humphrey will compete on Friday at 9:30 a.m. against Maryland, Ohio, Colgate, Lafayette and Iona. The top two finishers from six heats will compete in three semifinals on Saturday (10:41-10:55 a.m.). All other finishers not placing last will move on to three Repecharge Heats on Friday (2:50-3 p.m.), in which the top two finishers will also move on to the Saturday semifinals. The top two finishers from each semifinal will then compete for the Richard O’Brien Trophy in the Final at 4:40. The rest of the semifinal participants will compete in the Second Final at 4:10 p.m.

The Women’s Pair with Kelly Burke and Karly Greer will compete at 10:30 a.m. against Bowdoin, Geneseo, Carnegie Mellon, the U.S. Merchant Marines and Oklahoma City. The top three finishers from four heats will move on to three semifinals on Saturday (8:14-8:21). The top two from each semifinal will compete in the Final at 2:05 p.m.

The Women’s Freshman/Novice 4 made up of coxswain Carolyn Barquist, Allison Sobiech, Caitlin Halloran, Jenna Mannis and Marina Arishina will compete at 12:30 p.m. against Trent, Pittsburgh, Delaware, Marquette and Robert Morris. The top two finishers from nine heats will move on to three semifinals on Saturday (7-7:14). The top two from each semifinal will compete in the Final at 1 p.m.

The Men’s Junior Varsity 8 consisting of coxswain Anthony Magro, Andy Davis, Kevin Friedlander, John Gerety, Joey Civello, Chris Ottie, Parker Lawler, Wayne Reichard and Chris Barse will race on Friday at 4:43 p.m. against Ohio, Loyola, Delaware and Marietta. The top two finishers from three heats will compete for the Ernie Bayer Trophy in the Final at 4:10 p.m.
