Men’s rowing takes bronze at Murphy Cup
The Dolphins got some more hardware for the trophy case as the JU Men’s Varsity 8 squad took home bronze out of 20 Varsity 8 boats at the prestigious Murphy Cup Regatta on Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

JU, which had won the Varsity 8 competition in each of the last two seasons, may have placed third in the event this season but the finish continues to show the improved progress of the boat in 2011.

“Third is not a bad result against this competition but we’re not happy with it because it’s not what we came here to do,” said JU men’s head coach Jim Mitchell. “We can accept it as long as we look to make improvements and learn from this race experience, which is the main focus we had for this event.”

The Varsity 8 with coxswain Andrew Soloway, Andy Davis, Scott Del Vecchio, Richard Kelly, Greg VanOekel, Brian Cosmillo, Dylan Kosten, Kevin Friedlander and Brad Miller placed first in its initial heat with a time of 5:57.00 ahead of St. Joseph’s (6:06.66), Washington College (6:12.98).

In the Grand Final, the squad placed third with a mark of 5:58.26 behind Virginia (5:51.78) and Temple (5:56.21) but ahead of Delaware (6:00.65), Marist (6:07.39) and La Salle (6:16.67).
