The Jacksonville University men’s rowing team made its presence felt at this past weekend’s Head of the Hooch regatta with four top 10 finishers including one division winner.

The Micasa, with David Waugh, Matt Thomas, Chase Rowe, Jacob Strauss, Jeremy Sobiech, Drew Allen, Tim Easterling, Andrew Bechtold and Alex Borrelli aboard, took first in the Men’s Novice 8 as it traversed the Tennessee River course in Chattanooga in 15:33.8.

Micasa’s sister boat, the Bill and Eloise Gay with Brandon Krouppa, Stephen Marra, Danny O’Connor, Tyler Vivi, Jacob Motes, Chris Morgan, Shawn Macklefresh, Josh Holt and Carlos Garcia on board, finished sixth in the division in 16:49.4

The two Men’s Championship 8 boats posted a fifth and 11th in the division.

Andrew Soloway, Scott DelVecchio, Mick Mayer, Greg VanOekel, Bernard Vingilis, Parker Lawler, Brian Cosmillo, Andre Kleijn and Matt Outlaw plied the 5,000-meter course in 15:10.8. The Tiger Tim Tyler, with Tom Richards, Chris Ottie, Sean Carney,

Preston Weinard, Shane Kennedy, Troy Troupe, Jared Low, Brian Tye and Jesse Brantman aboard, covered the course in 15:52.7.

The Men’s Championship 4 had another top 10 effort as Ben Hayes, Sobiech, Thomas, Rowe and Strauss aboard EL4, finished sixth in 17:12.8. The EM4 boat, Richards, Lawler, Mayer, Kleijn and Outlaw, finished 13th in 17:32.1

"All of our boats rowed well but I was particularly proud of how our freshmen and novice raced,’’ coach Jim Mitchell said. “Both freshmen 8's had good results which bodes well for the future."

The team’s fall racing season will come to an end Saturday as it travels to Fellsmere, Fla., and the FIRA Fall Classic.
