A pair of men’s Novice boats, the Novice 4 and Novice 8 entries collected first and second place finishes leading the way.
The Novice 4 with Brandon Krouppa, Tyler Vivi, Jacob Motes, Chris Morgan and Shawn Macklefresh aboard, won its race and the Novice 8 craft, with Krouppa, Stephen Marra, Motes, Vivi, Drew Allen, Chris Morgan, Mackelfresh, Josh Holt and Carlos Garcia, took a strong second.
“Our novice boats had another good showing with the Four winning and the Eight second,’’ coach Jim Mitchell said. “Coach (Joey) Civello has done a great job with those guys and I look forward to seeing just how much these guys can learn.’’
JU’s veterans didn’t fare poorly as four of five entries had top five finishes.
In the Varsity 8 run on Canal 54 in Fellsmere, Fla., along the Brevard County, Indian River County line), the Dolphins finished second, fifth and seventh.
The leading boat of the trio had Andrew Soloway, Scott DelVecchio, Mick Mayer, Greg VanOekel, Bernard Vingilis, Parker Lawler, Brian Cosmillo, Andre Kleijn and Matt Outlaw on board. The fifth place finishing boat, Tiger Tim Tyler with Tom Richards, Chris Ottie, Sean Carney, Preston Weinard, Shane Kennedy, Troy Troupe, Jared Low, Brian Tye and Jesse Brantman finished mere seconds ahead of the third JU entry, Micasa, with David Waugh, Stephen Marra, Chase Rowe, Jacob Strauss, Jeremy Sobiech, Drew Allen, Tim Easterling, Andrew Bechtold and Alex Borrelli aboard.
The Varsity 4 entries also collected a pair of top five finishes as the EL4, with Waugh, Jeremy Sobiech, Mayer, Rowe and Strauss, took fourth and EM4 (Richards, DelVecchio, Vingilis, VanOekel and Cosmillo netted fifth.
“We had a good time at this year’s Classic,’’ Mitchell said. “This is a nice regatta with good competition and it’s a great way to finish fall racing. We figured out some areas of needed improvement and we will take that information into our winter training phase to prepare for a successful spring.’’
The spring season begins March 10 at the Keuper Cup at Fellsmere.
