GOLD RIVER, Calif.—The JU men’s rowing Varsity 4 raced twice Friday at the IRA National Championship on Lake Natoma in California.
The boat consisting of David Waugh (coxswain), Scott Del Vecchio, Scott Waitley, Preston Weinard, and Brian Cosmillo took part in heat #2 for the Varsity 4 segment and finished fifth with a time of 6:51.94. They were third at the halfway point of the race and were just edged out at the finish by Drexel by less than .6 of a second. The top two finishers in the heat automatically advanced to the semifinals while the other three boats moved to the repechage portion of the competition.
The JU Varsity 4 returned for its repechage heat in the afternoon to finish second in heat #4. JU stayed in second place behind Wisconsin the whole race and finished with a time of 6:51.45. The Dolphins will now advance to Saturday’s Varsity 4 semifinal #3 or #4.
