Men’s Rowing Wins in First Day of SIRAs
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.- Day No. 1 of the SIRA championships has come to an end for Jacksonville University’s men’s rowing program and the squad has definitely put JU on the map. In three of their four races, the Dolphins recorded top finishes and all four crews will advance to tomorrow’s semifinals.
The men’s pair of Stephen Marra and Alex DeLong was the first to hit the water at Melton Hill Lake. Sandwiched between Texas (7:13.0) and Emory (7:20.2), the duo finished in the 11th position with a time of 7:18.10.
JU’s Novice Eight crew was the first to cross the finish line in the top spot as they beat out all other boats in 6:15.1. Virginia finished second at 6:20.7 and was followed by Alabama, Miami-Ohio, Virginia Tech and Texas.
As the only crew to complete their heat in less than seven minutes, the men’s Varsity Four won its heat with a time of 6:56.3 with Clemson clocking in at 7:01.1, Washington at 7:06.3 and Samford at 7:49.3.
Florida Technical claimed the No. 1 spot in the Varsity Eight race but the Dolphins weren’t far behind as they trailed the Panthers to place second at 6:17.4.
Jacksonville returns to action Saturday morning at 859 a.m.
