Men’s Rowing Concludes SIRAs with a Novice Eight Medal
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville University men’s rowing program returns home to Florida with another medal. In Day 2 of the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) championships, the Dolphins Novice Eight was invited to the medal podium after placing second their race.
First up on JU’s Saturday agenda were the SIRA semifinals and the Dolphins rose early in the morning to prep for the 8:59 a.m. Novice Eight heat. George Washington University claimed the win in the event with a time of 6:18.6 and the Dolphins placed second at 6:26.3. In another 1-2 finish with GWU, the Colonials bested the finals in 6:18.6, nearly eight seconds ahead of Jacksonville. The boat, coxed by Stephen McDonald and sitting Luke Myhree, Shane Barnett, Victor Gargaun, Travis Pulliam, Scott Marx, Frank Maurice, Will Vanneck, and Nico MacKay received a silver medal with a time of 6:26.3.
Rowing in their semifinal heat, the Varsity Four cruised to a second place finish in 7:09.7 with the College of Charleston clocking in at 7:06.2 for first place. In the final, the Dolphins were nipped out of the medal standings as COC again outpaced the other crews in 6:59.6 and was followed by Duke (7:01.5) Georgia Tech (7:05.0), and JU (7:05.8). Marissa Chodrow coxed the boat and it seated Erik Fournier, Andrew Bechtold, Shane Kennedy, and Troy Troupe.
Racing in at fourth place in the seminfinals was enough for the men’s Varsity Eight crew to head into the B finals. The Micassa Boat, which consisted of Alex Tate at coxswain, Brian Cosmillo, Scott Del Vecchio, Scott Waitley, Chase Rowe, Nathan Esterline, Billy Macomber, Sean Carney and Andrew Stebbins, came in at third (6:19.7).
The men’s pair, Stephen Marra and Alex DeLong, finished fifth in their race with a time of 8:29.4. Vanderbilt owned the win at 7:50.7 and was trailed by Clemson, Virginia, Texas, Jacksonville and Emory.
The MAAC Championships are right around the corner and both the men’s and women’s programs will compete. The regatta is scheduled for April 26 at Mercer Lake, N.J.
