PHILADELPHIA – The Jacksonville University men’s rowing team accomplished its first objective on Friday at the Dad Vail Regatta, advancing each of its four boats into Saturday’s semifinals. The varsity fours, pairs, single and freshman/novice crews will all be back in the water tomorrow morning on the Schuylkill River with a chance to reach the finals in the afternoon.
The varsity fours team advanced to tomorrow morning’s semifinal by finishing second in its heat with a time of 6:41.172. Though the Dolphins were behind Oklahoma City in the race, their time was still the 10th best among the competing boats and allows them to reach the final if they can finish in the top two tomorrow among Dayton, Duke, Fordham, SUNY-Geneseo and Western Washington.
The pairs team of Nathan Esterline and Chase Rowe also advanced to the semifinals tomorrow with a second place finish in their heat. Clocking in at 6:58.594, the Dolphin duo was less than half a second behind Rollins in the race, but will have another shot tomorrow. The top two in a race that also features Clarkson, Georgia Tech, Loyola (MD), MSOE and Philadelphia will secure a spot in the final.
Scott Del Vecchio powered his way into tomorrow’s semifinals with a time of 7:38.108 in the singles race, besting every other racer in his heat by at least 24 seconds. He’ll be at it early tomorrow, competing in the second race of the morning. He’ll face opposition from the College of Charleston, Marquette, Oklahoma City, Virginia and VCU.
The freshman/novice eights boat also topped its heat, putting together a time of 5:55.039, the best time of anyone in the field. Only one other boat on the afternoon was able to crack the six-minute barrier, boding well for JU’s chances tomorrow. The Dolphins will need a top-two finish in the morning in a race against Minnesota, Pitt, Purdue, Saint Joseph’s and Virginia to reach the final.
Del Vecchio starts Saturday out for JU with his semifinal race at 7:07 a.m. The freshman boat follows at 8:21 a.m. Wrapping up the morning session is the pairs boat in a 9:09 a.m. semi and the varsity fours at 9:50 a.m. The men’s finals begin after 1 p.m.
