Steve Meehan is in his first year as an assistant coach on the JU men’s soccer staff.

Meehan joined the Dolphins after serving numerous years as a high school coach and local businessman. He came to the JU campus in March of 2011 to work for head coach Mike Johnson, where his responsibilities include coaching the goalkeepers and the defense.

Before coming back to JU, Meehan spent the last 12 years working at the high-school level. In 2000, he joined Westminster Christian Academy in Athens, Ga. to establish a men’s and women’s soccer program. During his 10-year run as head coach, Meehan led the men’s team to seven regional titles, six final-four appearances and three state runner-up appearances. In 2005, Meehan earned a promotion in becoming Westminster’s athletic director. His career record as a high school coach is 403-78-20.

Meehan’s ties to JU go back four decades. As a college player, Meehan served as co-captain on the Dolphins for two seasons, leading the team to its first Sunbelt Conference championship in 1978. For his efforts that season, he was named to the Florida All-State Collegiate Soccer Team, the All-South NCAA Soccer Team. He earned JU’s “Defensive Player of the Year” award in 1977 and was named "Most Valuable Player" in 1978. Coming of a stellar career, Meehan was recruited by the NASL Ft. Lauderdale Strikers.

The next season, Meehan began his coaching career as a player-assistant coach under Bill Coulthart. While earning JU’s “MVP” award, Meehan continued to fuel his coaching career in 1979 by leading the prep-level 5-AAAAA Ed White Commanders to the state finals. From there, he helped launch the University of North Florida’s first men’s club soccer team and moved on to head coaching positions at Mayport Middle School and Nease High School, earning two regional championships.

Meehan, who holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida, was a successful businessman who owned and operated a construction business for 10 years. He is also licensed by the USSF and has an NSCAA Advanced National diploma.

Meehan is a graduate of Duncan U. Fletcher High School., where he was the first public school student from Jacksonville to be named to the all-state men's soccer team. He and his wife Susan have three children.
