Sept. 24, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior goalkeeper Joey Sanchez earned Atlantic Sun Defensive "Player of the Week" honors after recording his first career shutout in a 1-0 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Sept. 23.
After missing the previous four games due to injury,Sanchez made five saves in his return to the lineup to defeat the Blazers UAB had won their previous five contests in a row, including a road victory over No. 10 ranked Indiana on Sept. 21.
"Joey's been very patient over the last three years because he has had some injury issues to overcome," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "He had an opportunity this weekend to show what he is capable of doing and I'm very excited he received this honor."
Sanchez becomes the second JU goalkeeper to win the award in just four weeks, after freshman Matt Gilman earned Defensive "Player of the Week" honors in week one.
"We said all along we had two very capable goalkeepers on this team who could win big games for us," Johnson said. "We are fortunate to have Joey and Matt on this team and my point is proven with both players winning this award this year."
The Dolphins will be in action again on Friday, taking on Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
