Oct. 15, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After impressive performances in the a 3-0 rout over Florida Gulf and a 1-0 shutout against Stetson, senior forward Anton Axelsson and freshman goalkeeper Matt Gilman swept the A-Sun "Player of the Week" awards.
This is the second time that Axelsson and Gilman have swept the "Player of the Week" awards - as both players received the honors on Sept. 4.
"Anton and Matt have stepped up in big games and have been difference makers in our wins," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "They also understand that individual honors come from team success and it is a reflection of how our team is performing at this point of the season. They are both very deserving and I look forward to seeing similar performances not only from them, but other members of our team."
Axelsson scored two goals against Florida Gulf Coast and was tormenting the Eagles' defense all game long. He completed the weekend with the game-winner against Stetson, who was ranked No. 6 in the NSCAA South Region Poll. He currently leads the A-Sun with a career high nine goals scored and 21 points.
Gilman made five saves and recorded the first two shutouts of his collegiate career to earn his second A-Sun Defensive "Player of the Week" honors. He has now gone over 198 minutes without conceding a goal. The Dolphins will be in action again on Wednesday, taking on North Florida at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
