JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's soccer team hosts cross-town rivals UNF on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex for the annual Viollet Cup and is the first matchup of this year's SunTrust River City Rumble.
"This game is definitely an important one for us," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "It not only has A-Sun implications, but also with the Viollet Cup and a River City Rumble point on the line. It will be a tough matchup but our guys will be up for the challenge."
The Dolphins are currently in first place in the A-Sun, coming in with a 5-1 record and are now ranked 10th in the South Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America polls.
Senior forward Anton Axelsson is leading the conference in points (21), points per game (1.75), goals (9), goals per game (0.75) and game-winning goals (4). He is currently tied for 10th in the nation in points per game and is 11th in goals per game.
Axelsson, along with freshman goalkeeper Matt Gilman, swept the A-Sun "Player of the Week" awards on Oct. 14th. The duo also accomplished the feat on Sept. 4.
Freshman forward Akil DeFreitas is the leader up front for the Ospreyes and leads the A-Sun in shots with 44. He is tied for sixth with 10 points and seventh with four goals. DeFreitas and fellow freshman forward Adam O'Neil each have two game-winning goals. Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Calise has been solid in the net for coach Ray Bunch.
The Viollet Cup is in honor of Dennis Viollet, a former professional soccer player with Manchester United and an English international, who is a former coach of JU and a key member of starting up the UNF soccer program. Violet still holds Manchester United's single season scoring record after he scored 32 goals in the 1959-1960 season.
Since the Viollet Cup was first contested in 2001, the series is tied at three games apiece, with the Dolphins taking the last three in a row.
