Men's soccer beats Flagler 4-0 on Senior Night
Nov. 3, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior forward Anton Axelsson played his last home game in front of his Dolphins' fans and went out in style - scoring a hat-trick in the Dolphins 4-0 win Saturday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Axelsson, who was recently named to the College Soccer News National "Team of the Week" proved to be too much for the Saint's defense on the offensive end, while junior goalkeeper Joey Sanchez and the Dolphins back four consisting of senior Brian Cocciolo, senior Austin Earl, sophomore Eddie Munnelly and freshman Patrick Rundio were just as tough at the back.
"I am extremely proud of the guys," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "We had to win the championship on the road last week and I challenged them before tonight to make this the encore performance. We wanted to let everyone know that we are the champions of the A-Sun and we are going to play this way down the stretch. Everybody got to play tonight and the younger guys got to gain more experience."
Axelsson's first goal came in the eigth minute after he received a pass from sophomore midfielder Jonathan Jackson and blasted the ball into the top right corner from outside the box. It only took him four minutes to get his name on the scoresheet again, this time receiving a cross from Rundio and firing in from eight yards out. His third goal came in the 52nd minute after he one timed Phillip Meyner's cross that was flicked on by Rundio.
Axelsson's first career hat-trick gives him 15 goals on the season and improves his leads in every major offensive category in the A-Sun.
Sophomore midfielder Riley Butler scored his first goal of the season after he tapped in the rebound of a shot from junior midfielder Ramak Niakan safi that Saint's goalkeeper Zach Volpi couldn't handle.
"Anton lived up to his billing," Johnson said. "He was huge for us tonight and we got big performances from other people as well. I was happy for Riley. I am extremely proud of the kids, it is good to finish off the home season with a win and I look forward to ending the regular season with another good performance against Florida Atlantic."
Along with Axelsson, senior's Cocciolo, Earl, and midfielder Drew Lear played their final home match in a Dolphins' uniform.
"It was real important that we sent those guys off with a quality effort," said Johnson. "The guys played with a lot of passion for the seniors and things finished the way we needed to. I am extremely proud of the team. You could tell the crowd appreciated them as well and we thank them for the support."
The Dolphins outshot the Saints 15-6 and were able to get 24 different players into the match. The Dolphins have now kept three consecutive shutouts.
The Dolphins will complete the regular season at 7 p.m. on Friday against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla.
