Men’s soccer announces 2008 schedule
The JU men’s soccer team will learn the true meaning of being “road warriors” starting on Aug. 30 in Las Vegas, as the Dolphins announce their 2008 schedule on Thursday.
The Dolphins, who are the defending 2007 Atlantic Sun regular-season champions, are slated to play 12 contests on the road this season as opposed to six games at the friendly confines of the Ashley Sports Complex.
JU kicks off the season with one of its three road tournaments with the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas to play the host Rebels and Western Illinois from Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
“It’s another challenging non-conference beginning for us,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “Going on the road to play UNLV and Western Illinois is going to be a big and exciting trip for us to start the season. It’s going to be tough to be on the road so much, but I know our guys can handle it and plan to get the job done.”
The Dolphins open the home schedule against former A-Sun foe Gardner-Webb on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. and finish the weekend with Florida Atlantic at 5 p.m. on Sept. 7.
The Dolphins hit the road again for the adidas Gamecock Classic against Presbyterian and South Carolina starting Sept. 12 in Columbia, S.C. After a road trip to Georgia Southern (Sept. 21), they wrap up the tournament slate against College of Charleston and Alabama A&M at the Saturn of Charleston/Nike Soccer Classic on Sept. 25 & 27.
The nine-game A-Sun schedule starts with road trips to USC-Upstate (Oct. 3) and East Tennessee State (Oct. 5). JU opens the home part of their conference slate against Mercer on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. They will look for revenge to wrap up the weekend against Campbell (Oct. 11) as the Camels left a bitter taste in the Dolphins’ mouth with a shootout win in the 2007 A-Sun Tournament Championship.
Following a two-game set, the Dolphins have a grueling road stretch in the state of Florida against Stetson (Oct. 17), Florida Gulf Coast (Oct. 19) and cross-town rival North Florida (Oct. 25).
The Dolphins will look to gain a point in the fourth-annual SunTrust River City Rumble battle and the Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup against the Ospreys after dropping a 2-1 double overtime decision last season at the Ashley Sports Complex.
JU finishes the 2008 schedule hosting Belmont on Halloween (Oct. 31) at 7 p.m. and Lipscomb for Senior Day on Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
The 2008 A-Sun championship is slated for Nov. 12-15 in Buies Creek, N.C.
In 2007, the Dolphins claimed their first A-Sun regular season championships after posting a 7-2 conference mark and finishing 11-7-2 overall (their fourth-highest win total in school history). Johnson, the 2007 A-Sun “Coach of the Year” led JU to its first A-Sun tournament since 2001, while former Dolphin Anton Axelsson posted a conference 16 goals and 36 points to be named A-Sun “Player of the Year” honors.
