Men’s soccer downed by Western Illinois, 3-1
Western Illinois scored two first half goals and never looked back to earn a 3-1 win over the JU men’s soccer team in the final day of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Monday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Stadium.

Martin Browne, Jr. had assists on two of the three goals for the Leathernecks (2-0), while junior midfielder Stefan Runeman added the Dolphins (0-2) lone goal of the game.

“We had too many mental mistakes today,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “Our team just didn’t play our game and it hurt us. We will regroup this week and look forward to playing in front of our fans on Friday.”

Darryl Odom gave the Leathernecks the lead in the first half when he slipped a shot underneath sophomore goalie Matt Gilman on assists from Browne and Jona Andrade.

Andrade hooked up with Nikola Katic less than six minutes later to score his first goal of the season by tapping a cross in from the right side.

The Leathernecks put the game out of reach in the second half after Arthur Pazkowski scored on a header at the 53-minute mark to make it a 3-0 advantage.

Runeman recorded an unassisted goal less then three minutes later, but the Dolphins couldn’t muster a comeback.

Stephen Patterson (2-0) tallied three saves in goal for Western Illinois, while Gilman finished with five stops on 12 shots for JU.

The Dolphins play again on Friday at the Ashley Sports Complex against former Atlantic Sun rival Gardner-Webb. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
