Men’s soccer fall to South Carolina, 2-0
South Carolina scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the match to defeat the JU men’s soccer team, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the adidas/Gamecock Classic in Columbia, S.C.

Sophomore forward Sam McArthur scored both goals for the Gamecocks (3-2-1) within six minutes of each other to help earn the win and sophomore goalie Jimmy Maurer made five stops between the posts for the Gamecocks.

The Dolphins (2-4-0) outshot the Gamecocks, 7-to-4, in the second half and finished the match with a 12-8 advantage. Senior forward Sebastian Lindholm and freshman midfielder Kristian Lassen each had three attempts to lead JU.

“Overall, I was pleased with the way we played this weekend,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “It was unfortunate we lost today because our guys played their hearts out and we dominated every statistic. They deserved to win, but that is the way games go sometimes.

“I was happy that we didn’t give up a goal in the field of play and we played good offensively. We have to continue this momentum into next week for our next road trip.”

In the 80th minute, McArthur broke the scoreless tie by scoring his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick following a yellow card to JU.

McArthur scored again less than six minutes later on an assist from freshman midfielder David MacVance to secure the win.

Despite the loss, Lindholm, junior midfielder Stefan Runeman and junior defender Eddie Munnelly were each named to the all-tournament team. Munnelly also was named Defensive MVP after helping JU to a 3-0 shutout victory over Presbyterian on Sept. 12 and his play today.

The Dolphins continue their nomadic trek on Friday, Sept. 21, as they travel to face Georgia Southern in the only match of the week. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
