Men’s soccer falls to Alabama A&M, 2-1
Alabama A&m scored two second half goals to defeat the JU men’s soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Saturn of Charleston/Nike Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Dolphins (3-6) dropped their second consecutive one-goal match to end the classic winless, while the Bulldogs (5-3-2) scored both goals in the final 15 minutes to earn the victory.

“It just wasn’t our day,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “They are a very good and well-coached team. We had our chances to push our lead ahead, but couldn’t take advantage of it. We now have to turn our focus to the conference schedule starting next week.”

Sophomore forward Conner Vogel gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal of the season on a pass from freshman midfielder Kyle Johnson with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

The Bulldogs tied the match in the 75rd minute on a goal from senior forward MfanaFuthi Bhembe. Bhembe came up big again in the 83rd minute when he delivered the pass to senior midfielder Lwazi Maziya for the game-winning goal.

Sophomore goalie Boitshoko Pule recorded six saves in the post for the Bulldogs, while JU sophomore goalie Matt Gilman made seven stops in the loss.

Despite the loss, senior forward Sebastian Lindholm and junior defender Eddie Munnelly were named to the all-tournament team.

The Dolphins return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, for their Atlantic Sun Conference opener against USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. at 7 p.m.
